"Unusual for out here:" 16-year-old boy shot, seriously injured near Bugline Trail in Sussex

WAUKESHA COUNTY -- A 16-year-old boy was taken to the hospital with serious injuries after he was shot near the Bugline Trail in Sussex.

There was a heavy law enforcement presence near Highway 164 and Silver Spring Drive Saturday afternoon, May 14th. Much of the area was roped off as authorities investigated the shooting.

"Kind of unusual for out here for sure. It's kind of scary," said Earl Mickler.

The area near the Pick 'n Save store was locked down after a report of shots fired near the Bugline Trail around 3:30 p.m. Saturday.

"I just heard a bunch of cops start coming so I just stuck around and they just blocked off all the driveways," said Mickler.

Curious residents watched as first responders from several nearby communities came to help.

A spokeswoman with the Waukesha County Sheriff's Department said they found the 16-year-old boy from Sussex laying in the grass on the north side of the Pick 'N Save parking lot with a gunshot wound.

"This is an isolated incident. At this point we don't believe there's anyone in this area in any danger at all," said Jennifer Wallschlaeger with the Waukesha County Sheriff's Department.

Authorities believe the victim was targeted by the shooter. They're still trying to figure out why.

As for the shooter's identity, officials said they were interviewing multiple people of interest.

"We have several witnesses that are involved -- so we have numerous witnesses. We have other people that we're talking to at this point," said Wallschlaeger.

We're told the teenage victim was initially transported to Waukesha Memorial Hospital, before being moved to Children's Hospital in Milwaukee. Officials said he suffered serious injuries.
