GREEN BAY -- A Wisconsin congressman says transgender issues show that the country is in "moral decline." The Obama administration is telling public schools to let transgender students use the restroom they prefer, and some Wisconsin Republicans are pushing back.

Congressman Glenn Grothman

Congressman Glenn Grothman reminisced a time when a TV character wearing a dress was funny. Now, there is a legal fight as to whether states and schools can restrict restroom access for transgender students.

"A lot of us see America changing a lot," U.S. Rep. Grothman (R-Glenbeulah) said.

At the Wisconsin Republican Convention this past weekend in Green Bay, Grothman explained his point with a reference to the TV show M*A*S*H. In an attempt to get discharged, Corporal Klinger wore women's clothing to be deemed "mentally unfit for service."

"Remember there was a show M*A*S*H awhile ago in which one of the comedy guys was wearing a dress? Hillary Clinton says one of the goals is to get the transgendered in the military. That`s one of her goals. And they say we don`t care about economic issues," Grothman said.

Grothman was critical of the legal fight over which school restroom transgender students should use.

Last week, the Obama administration told public schools to let transgender students use the restroom of their choosing.

Some see it as a modern-day civil rights battle.

Attorney General Loretta Lynch

"It was not too very long ago that states, including North Carolina, had other signs above restrooms, water fountains and other accommodations keeping people out based on a distinction without a difference," U.S. Attorney General Loretta Lynch said.

Grothman wasn't the only one to have concerns at the GOP convention.

Rep. Sean Duffy

"I like to check out random tweets. And James Woods, the actor, had a tweet that 'the world is fighting Islamic terrorism. Obama, Hillary and the Democrats are fighting for men to pee in women`s bathrooms,'" U.S. Rep. Sean Duffy (R-Wausau) said.

"This impacts every family that has a student in any public school anywhere in the united states of America," U.S. Rep. Jim Sensenbrenner (R-Menomonee Falls) said.

Grothman's office did not respond to an interview request Monday, May 16th.

Megin McDonell with Fair Wisconsin, a group that advocates on LGBT issues sent this statement to FOX6 News following Grothman's comments:

"Over the years, Representative Grothman's opinions on everything from the gender pay gap to Kwanzaa continue to demonstrate how out of touch he is with most of America.  According to recent polling, more Americans know and accept transgender people than ever before."

Asked whether Wisconsin would join North Carolina is passing restroom legislation, Governor Scott Walker has said there was very little interest in the issue here.

I’m tired of the media and the Democrats (and the crazy liberals) making this out to be about bathrooms -this includes SHOWERS, and changing rooms. Furthermore, it doesn’t say if someone ‘looks’ like a girl, they can use the women’s room. It say if someone ‘self-identifies’ as a women they can use the women’s room, shower, whatever. Straight up guy letting it all hang out -and what can you do? NOTHING! If that how he ‘feels’ than no one can question him -or kick him out, or cite him for disorderly conduct, or lewd behavior!!!! This is absolutely non-sense!!

Lesbians are already showering and changing in women’s locker rooms. Who cares? Nobody cares.

      • Tabatha

What does a lesbian have anything to do with a guy being able to claim he self identifies as a woman or a woman claim to self identify as a guy to be able to go in the opposite sex locker rooms. It is one thing if they have fully transformed, but it is going to set up for so many bad things.

Obama and Lynch hacks aways telling everyone what to do, how to, and when to.
    What pieces of crap.
Can’t the media ask these fools why. No hard questions.
The media lets this Obama clown pass on every issue.

Patience my fellow conservatives. The liberal loony leftist feminist bowel movement democratic machine will soon find a safe space when our new conservative leader is elected this fall. Prayer and pledge of allegiance shall reign throughout the nation in schools again. LGBT will not be bothered and shall live in peace among us. They just won’t be able to shove their agenda down our throats and most of all young women won’t have their dignity taken away from them. Who are these Democrats that have caused this.. The silent majority is about to turn the tide of the social justice warriors, black lies matter, mizzou protesters, miscreants, welfare queens and stupid hollywood liberals. Rejoice!!

The commenters here don’t actually know transgender people and don’t see them as human so their ignorance is somewhat understandable. You would know that a trans woman is a woman and a trans man is a man. Trans people fight in our military, and serve on our police force. They put out your home when it’s on fire and administer CPR to your injured loved ones. Trans people are everywhere and you never noticed before. If you have a problem with perverts in bathrooms then ban sex offenders from using the bathroom.

    • Tabatha

It’s not the transgender people that people are having a problem with because when they go into men’s or women’s bathrooms or lockers it is usually after their procedure is finished. The problem is some paedophile or rapist whether man or woman can claim their identity as the opposite and no one can stop them from the locker room and undress in front of everyone. I have no issues with transgenders but I do have an issue with the whole “what you identify as” because that leaves it open for many, and I am not ok with that.

For Pete’s sake this is rediculous Obama-nations reform has serious ramifications. When I was stationed in the Philipeans years ago for the sake of privacy a sex deviant could lock the doors on a restroom for sex with others inside. It was pathetic. This happened in bars and nightclubs especially. This president is destroying the moral fiber of our great nation. Right now if a transgender who is dressed like a man could use a men’s restroom and I probably wouldn’t notice or care. But what Obama is doing has the ability to add on liberally to include sex drugs etc into every public restroom in due time and if the doors were locked nothing could be done. God help us…

Congressman Glenn Grothman, your asinine MASH verbiage is not in the least bit humorous. As an ignorant, dumb ass republican how are you going to look when the main issue comes to , just how we became Trans. It’s a birth anomaly and the world sees you Republicans as: European Union says US states are ‘breaking human rights treaty’ with anti-LGBT laws. That’s your Party Mr. Grothman, and your mendacious Lie of the “bathroom Myth,” has met it’s demise. In North Carolina your party has revealed it’s Bigoted, religious driven machinations to destroy anything LGBT and the world knows now. You are going down in flames.
