Fond du Lac police pay tribute to more than 20,000 officers killed in the line of duty in the U.S.

FOND DU LAC -- The city of Fond du Lac on Wednesday, May 18th held its annual "national law enforcement officers memorial ceremony" -- paying tribute to the more than 20,000 law enforcement officers who have been killed in the line of duty in the United States.

On that list were three Fond du Lac police officers, and Wisconsin State Patrol Trooper Trevor Casper, who died in March of 2015 while pursuing a bank robbery suspect.

"The message to the people of this nation on this very somber week is the incredible service and the sacrifices of our nation's law enforcement officers is far too often forgotten and taken for granted," Fond du Lac Police Chief William Lamb said.

Law enforcement officials say another staggering statistic is the fact that on average, nearly 59,000 officers are assaulted each year in the United States.
