On Memorial Day, officers from multiple agencies out looking for drunk drivers, seat belt violations

WAUKEHSA -- It was a busy Memorial Day holiday weekend for law enforcement officials -- both on land and on the water. Officials with the Wisconsin State Patrol on Monday, May 30th took part in special OWI patrols -- and FOX6 News went along for the ride.

Sgt. Nakia Guyton

It was Sgt. Nakia Guyton's job to ensure everyone got home safely after a long holiday weekend. The Wisconsin State Patrol trooper has been on patrol for 17 years.

The Southeast Wisconsin OWI Task Force deployment for Memorial Day weekend kicked off on Friday, May 27th.

"It's not uncommon to stop someone for speeding and come to find out they have been under the influence of alcohol or narcotics," Guyton said.

Guyton is based out of the regional office in Waukesha.

"I would say the traffic volume is much higher," Guyton said.

Troopers were joined by 35 other law enforcement agencies working around the clock -- focusing on impaired driving and seat belt enforcement.

"We do have more officers out here, looking for those types of violations, let alone OWI," Guyton said.

According to officials, since October 2015, there have been 200 impaired drivers arrested following 4,000 traffic stops.

Guyton says every department in involved with this Memorial Day weekend deployment is adamant about preventing injury and death on the road.

"Some people do like to partake in alcoholic beverages during this time. Just asking that they are have a designated driver drive that vehicle for you," Guyton said.
