Jameel Ali bound over for trial; accused of sexually assaulting woman weeks after release

MILWAUKEE -- Convicted sex offender Jameel Ali pleaded not guilty to three criminal charges and was bound over for trial in court on Tuesday, May 31st.

Ali, 67, is accused of offending again shortly after his release. Officials say he also failed to keep them updated as to his whereabouts. He was in court on Tuesday for his preliminary hearing.

Ali has been criminally charged in connection with a sexual assault that happened on May 15th. This, less than a month after the registered sex offender was released back into the community.

Ali faces the following charges:

Ali was initially released back into the community on April 20th, with the requirement that he inform officials if he moved. Authorities say he failed to do that.

He first reported an address on Capitol Drive, but GPS monitoring led authorities to believe he was actually staying at a home on Holton Street.

"That is where the GPS points were showing that he was located, around that area. That's not an address that we found exactly, but that's the area that the points were showing," Rebecca Mahin, Wisconsin Sex Offender Registry specialist said.

According to the criminal complaint, on Sunday, May 15th around 3:30 a.m., in the neighborhood near Holton and Hadley, Ali sexually assaulted a female victim in an acquaintance’s house they were both sleeping at.

The woman was able to get away after another friend entered the room.

"Based on the testimony placed on this record, I do find that there is cause to believe that a felony probably was committed in the county of Milwaukee, probably committed by this defendant. Therefore, he is bound over for trial," Barry Phillips, prosecutor said.

Jameel Ali is due back in court on June 21st.
