"It looks like a young kid:" 911 calls released after 23-year-old woman hit, killed in Marquette Interchange

MILWAUKEE -- 911 calls have been released after a fatal crash in the Marquette Interchange that happened late on Monday night, June 6th. 23-year-old Bailey Hallio was seen dancing in the middle of the roadway -- facing oncoming traffic when she was struck by an SUV and then another car. She was pronounced dead at the hospital -- and the driver of the SUV was later arrested.

Below are the 911 calls related to the crash:

Dispatcher: "You said she's laying in the road?"

911 Caller: "Yes. She's laying in the middle of the road. The man...I have a man that's standing on the side of me. He said he hit something, but he doesn't know what it was."

The incident happened in the northbound lanes of I-43 (on the north end of the high-rise bridge) around 11:00 p.m. That's when the 911 calls started pouring in.

911 Caller: "There's a person standing on the freeway on I-43."

Officials say Hallio was dancing in the middle lane in the Marquette Interchange.

911 Caller: "He might have been walking towards me but I think he's intentionally standing there where I couldn't see him until I was essentially right on top of him."

911 Caller: "It looks like a young kid."

Dispatcher: "Ok -- we have someone on the way out there."

Auala Sefo Jr.was driving with his wife and young son when he saw Hallio in traffic -- prancing and crouching in what Sefo Jr. said looked like a football stance.

He said he saw Hallio's face and jumped into action.

"I jumped out. I tried to run and grab her. The SUV came out of nowhere -- just took her out. It just happened right in front of me,"

And then, a second vehicle hit Hallio -- as Sefo Jr. watched in horror.

"She flipped in the air. Landed on a Chevy Impala. She was dragged under the Chevy Impala for about 30 yards," Sefo Jr. said.

911 Caller: "This is the Milwaukee police calling to say someone was hit on the highway."

911 Caller: "It's a woman. I do not believe she is alive."

911 Caller: "When I was passing by, it looked like a female. There's like five or six cars stopped on the highway right now. It looks like she's lying on the ground. It doesn't look like she's alive right now."

Officials say the SUV left the scene after the crash, while several other vehicles stopped traffic to prevent the woman from being struck again as she lay unconscious on the roadway. The driver of the SUV eventually returned to the scene, Sheriff's officials say, and said his vehicle did not strike the pedestrian. However, due to damage to his vehicle and witness accounts, the driver was arrested.

FOX6 News is told the Milwaukee County District Attorney's Office hasn't gotten the reports yet to make a decision as to potential charges.

Hallio was pronounced dead at Froedtert Hospital around 11:30 p.m.

Sefo Jr. met with her family on Wednesday, June 8th. He said he wanted to talk with them and let them know that Hallio wasn't alone on Monday night.
