Milwaukee man accused of posing as a professional baseball player sentenced to one year probation

MILWAUKEE COUNTY -- A Milwaukee man who pleaded guilty after he was accused of posing as a professional baseball player to two different sports agents has been sentenced.

Montaous Walton

32-year-old Montaous Walton on June 1st pleaded guilty to one count of theft-false representation, less than $2,500. A second charge was dismissed as a result of that plea deal.

In court on Wednesday, June 8th, Walton was sentenced to serve nine months in the House of Correction with credit for 33 days served -- straight time. That sentence was stayed -- and Walton was sentenced to one year probation.

The criminal complaint against Walton indicates he approached two different sports agents about representing him; once in August 2011 and again in June 2012. In each instance, Walton indicated he was a 24-year-old professional baseball player that had signed a contract with the Toronto Blue Jays of the American League.

In the first instance, a California sports agent provided Walton with cash, goods and services totaling more than $4,500. When the agent eventually found out Walton was not a baseball player, he confronted him and Walton admitted he did not have a contract with the Blue Jays.

The complaint indicates the second instance of this alleged fraud took place starting June 2, 2012. Walton apparently approached a sports agent in Ontario, Canada. That agent provided Walton with more than $1,200 in cash, goods and services — again under the assumption that Walton had a contract with the Blue Jays. The agent later learned this was not true. The complaint says Walton apologized to the agent for his actions.
