Milwaukee man accused of stealing boxes of ammunition from Farm & Fleet stores

Daniel Sonsthagen

WAUKESHA COUNTY -- 39-year-old Daniel Sonsthagen of Milwaukee faces a felony count of retail theft for allegedly stealing thousands of dollars worth of boxed ammunition from Farm & Fleet stores in Oak Creek and Waukesha.

According to the criminal complaint, officials were able to track down thefts that occurred between December 28, 2015 and February 1, 2016. Those thefts represented a total of nearly 500 boxes of ammunition for a loss of more than $11,000.

The complaint indicates surveillance video was secured for all of the incidents -- and it was with that video that officials were able to identify the suspect as Sonsthagen. The "video from these incidents would show the defendant clearing out the shelf of various selected ammunition and then he would put the items into the cart. At some point within the store, the defendant would either put the ammunition into a black handbag or cover the ammunition with his black coat."

The complaint goes on to say Sonsthagen "can then be seen during all incidents exiting the store with either the black duffel bag" or "he covered the ammunition inside the cart with his jacket and can be seen exiting the store with the cart."

When contacted by investigators, the complaint indicates Sonsthagen "tried to negotiate with officers as to what kind of penalties he would get if he confessed to this incident."

If convicted on the charge, Sonsthagen faces up to ten years in prison and $25,000 in fines.
