Facilities declining to care for former deputy with ALS found not legally responsible for deaths of wife, sister-in-law

MADISON — Some medical facilities are declining to offer care for a former Wisconsin sheriff's deputy suffering from advanced ALS who was found not legally responsible for killing his wife and sister-in-law in 2014.

Andrew Steele

A judge ruled in March that former Dane County Deputy Andrew Steele could be released from a mental institution.

But a state official told Dane County Judge Nicholas McNamara on Friday, June 10th that more than 40 medical facilities have been contacted and none have expressed interest in taking care of Steele.

Beth Dodsworth says Steele's high-profile case was a "resounding" factor. The Wisconsin State Journal reports the judge told Dodsworth to keep looking.

A jury found Steele not legally responsible for the shooting deaths of his wife, Ashlee Steele, and her sister, Kacee Tollefsbol, of Lake Elmo, Minnesota.
