"It was brave of her:" Good Samaritan calls police, babysitter arrested for DUI with kids in the car

MOUNT SINAI, New York -- A young woman from New York is facing DUI and child endangerment charges -- after allegedly driving drunk with the four young children she was supposed to be babysitting in the vehicle. This could have ended tragically had it not been for the actions of some Good Samaritans.

19-year-old Sabrina Macri of Sound Beach, New York was silent en route to court on Friday, July 1st. The babysitter was arrested at the beach after other beachgoers grew alarmed watching her, allegedly drunk, walk to her car and then pile in four children.

"She was stumbling and she looked very confused," Nicole Diaz said.

"She was acting like she didn't have any problems -- but clearly, she did," Linda Ferrone said.

Diaz and her mother were arriving at Mount Sinai's Cedar Beach when they saw the woman start to drive away. They jumped into action.

"She said she was fine and I knew that she wasn't so I decided to call the police. When I did see her start to drive out, I blocked the exit with my car," Diaz said.

"There would have been some kind of accident," Ferrone said.

In court, Macri's attorney said the young woman will be undergoing treatment. Her online profile is a catalog of pictures and posts featuring alcohol.

"We are thankful there was no accident, nobody was injured. Obviously we have a lot of investigation to do," Anthony Scheller, defense attorney said.

At Cedar Beach, folks applauded the actions of these Good Samaritans.

"It was brave of her. Most people don't want to get involved if they don't know the whole situation -- so she took a chance," Jeanne Colwell said.

"I think that more people need to -- if they see something, say something. And a lot of people probably saw her and looked the other way and said, 'wow that's a mess.' But you just can't let that happen because you would have read about it in a different way," Diaz said.

Macri is charged with DWI and endangering the welfare of four boys -- ages four to 11 years old. She's also out of a job. A judge ordered her to stay away from the family she was working for as a nanny.
