Two cars, property stolen over Fourth of July weekend in Mequon

MEQUON -- Two cars stolen and property stolen from more than 20 vehicles over the Fourth of July weekend in Mequon -- and police say all the vehicles had something in common. Thieves are going for cars parked in quiet subdivisions, but they're not smashing windows to get in.

Between Sunday, July 3rd and Monday, July 4th, Mequon police believes the same group of suspects took items from 26 unlocked cars -- and stole two.

Most of the thefts took place overnight on the east side of the city -- between Port Washington Road and the Milwaukee River. Extending as far north as Highland Road and as far south as County Line Road.

Police are urging residents to be more proactive.

"People have heard car alarms going off, dogs barking, that sort of thing, most of the calls haven't come in to us when they hear suspicious noises in the neighborhood. So if there is suspicious activity in the neighborhood, definitely give us a call," said Det. John Hoell from the Mequon Police Department.

It may seem obvious, but Mequon Police say the best way to ensure you are not a target is to remove your keys from your vehicle and remove your valuables. Then, lock your car.

"I keep them in the garage, keep the garage doors down and we lock the vehicles in the garage," said John Beck, Mequon resident.

Local neighborhood associations are warning residents to be vigilant as police step up patrols and continue to search for suspects.

Mequon police say the stolen vehicles are a red BMW and maroon Hyundai.
