Sheriff's Office: Baby dies after inmate with special needs gives birth at Milwaukee County Jail

MILWAUKEE -- Officials with the Milwaukee County Sheriff's Office say a baby was found unresponsive at the Milwaukee County Jail Thursday morning, July 14th after an inmate with special needs gave birth.

According to the Sheriff's Office, a correctional officer making a routine housing unit inspection in the Special Needs section of the Milwaukee County Jail found a woman holding a baby.

The inmate had not notified anyone that she was going into labor.

Milwaukee Fire Department emergency personnel and jail medical staff responded.

The baby was pronounced dead.

The cause of death will be determined by an autopsy.

The inmate was transported to the hospital.

An investigation is underway.
