Milwaukee Co. Parks have extended hours at some wading pools, "Cool Spots"

MILWAUKEE -- The hot and muggy weather has people looking for a fun way to cool off -- and one way to stay comfortable is to get in the water. Milwaukee County Parks officials have extended hours at some area wading pools and "Cool Spots," to offer some relief.

In the middle of the heat wave this week, some kids have tried to make the most of the outdoors.

"I like swimming because I really like being in water," said four-year-old Ela Lukowski.

The wading pool at Ohio Playfield on Milwaukee's south side is one of seven wading pools in the city that could bring relief.

"We just stopped here, but it is only going to be like 30 minutes, and then we go home," said Irma Maldonado, Ela's grandmother.

If you are planning to have fun in the sun amid the intense heat, you are urged to be smart.

"Drink some water," said Lukowski.

"She drinks a lot of water and liquids, and try to feed them a bit of fruit and stuff that is good for them in this time," said Neil Brzezinski, Ela's grandfather.

Advice from City of Milwaukee Health Department officials includes: Stay cool, stay hydrated and stay informed.

Dizziness, nausea or headaches are three warning signs for heat-related illnesses. Over-exertion can happen more quickly in the extreme heat, so even if you're having fun, remember to slow down and find some shade.

"She gets a little tired and cranky, and stuff like that. You can tell just by looking at them," said Neil Brzezinski.

Milwaukee Public Libraries can be a good spot to cool off in the air conditioning. They have extended hours Thursday, July 21st and Friday, July 22nd.
