Man dies from injuries after shooting at Sherman & Burleigh, near scene of gas station protest

MILWAUKEE -- Milwaukee police are investigating a shooting that led to the death of a man on the city's north side late Saturday, July 23rd. It happened near a BP gas station that has been the scene of protests since a shots fired incident that happened on July 19th.

Officers responded to the neighborhood near Sherman and Burleigh around 11:30 p.m. Saturday.

Police say the 22-year-old man, identified as Jovonte Daniels, was confronted by the suspect -- and words were exchanged. At some point, the suspect shot the victim and fled from the scene.

Daniels was taken to a hospital and died from his injuries.

Milwaukee police say they are seeking a person of interest in this shooting -- a 21-year-old man.

This incident happened in the same area where protesters had gathered this past week -- to encourage a boycott of the BP gas station in the area.

"It moved into us boycotting this gas station because we felt like they weren't respecting us," Derrick Madlock said.

Police say a clerk at the gas station fired his gun into the air in an effort to disperse a crowd of kids. That clerk now faces a misdemeanor disorderly conduct charge and has been fired from his job.

The protest encouraging the boycott of the gas station lasted several days. But on Friday, the owner of the station and the protesters had a meeting of the minds -- agreeing to talk. Then on Saturday, a block party was held to bring the two sides together once again.

"Now, it's reconstruction time," James Harris said.

Organizers called it an emergency block party -- and invited neighbors to attend and help build relationships.

"Just letting everyone know that we supported our kids and love our kids, and we are celebrating our neighborhoods -- trying to bring everything back to where it's supposed be," Jeff Anderson said.

Just hours after that peaceful block party -- a man lost his life after a shooting in the area.

The investigation into the homicide is ongoing.
