FOX Sports' Ken Rosenthal: Sources indicate Prince Fielder's career could soon be over

Prince Fielder's career could soon be over.

Ken Rosenthal with FOX Sports is reporting sources have indicated the Rangers are expected to hold a press conference Wednesday, August 10th.

Fielder had season-ending neck surgery on July 29th to repair a herniated disk in his neck.

The surgery was performed in Dallas by Dr. Drew Dossett, who two years ago did a cervical fusion of two disks just below the area that was bothering Fielder in July.

Dossett had recommended the second surgery after seeing Fielder on Monday, July 25th.

That confirmed the recommendation of Dr. Robert Watkins, who examined the slugger in Los Angeles when an MRI showed a herniation between Fielder's C4 and C5 disks.

Fielder has hit a career-low .212 with eight homers and 44 RBIs in 89 games this season. He is medically disabled and doctors will not clear him to play. He is guaranteed $24 million a year through 2020, according to Rosenthal.

If it truly is the end of Fielder's career, he'll finish with 319 homers, the same number as his father, Cecil.

Fielder was selected in the 2002 MLB Draft by the Milwaukee Brewers out of Eau Gallie High School in Melbourne, Florida. He spent seven years with the Brewers before he signed with the Detroit Tigers in January of 2012.

On November 20, 2013, Fielder was traded to the Texas Rangers for second baseman Ian Kinsler and $30 million.
