"It's a unique situation:" Former police officer talks about the stress officers face in riot situations

MILWAUKEE -- Milwaukee has been witness to some very tense moments since violence erupted Saturday night, August 13th. They are moments when officers are under the most pressure, but have to perform at their best.

Police in riot gear and SWAT vehicles rolling into position are themselves, lasting images.

"It's a unique situation that has developed and that is being resolved," said Brian Dorow, criminal justice instructor at Waukesha County Technical College (WCTC).

Video of upset individuals framed with stoic officers is dramatic. But in Dorow's opinion, this is a testament and record of good police training.

"Very effective, you've seen all the agencies come together, mutual aid, they are working together," Dorow said.

Dorow is a former police officer. He now leads the Criminal Justice Program at WCTC. He said in fragile situations, officers allow for a higher threshold of certain behavior to, in effect, de-escalate a crowd.

Dorow said riots or violent protests put officers under incredible stress. But officers learn to control breathing, remain calm and think clearly.

"They are going to resort back to their training. Their training always kicks in," Dorow said.

Dorow said how police and sheriff's deputies respond to scenarios can be referenced in future training.
