Latest: Zachary Hays pleads not guilty in death of Gabriel Sanchez

MILWAUKEE -- Zachary Hays pleaded not guilty on Thursday, August 18th to a single charge of first-degree reckless homicide for the death of 42-year-old Gabriel Sanchez, which happened in West Allis on May 1st.

Hays was in court Thursday for his preliminary hearing -- which he waived. The court then found probable cause to bind Hays over for trial in the Sanchez case.

Hays also faces four felony charges out of Sauk County for the fatal drive-by shooting on I-90/94 which followed the murder in West Allis on May 1st:

    Gabriel Sanchez and Tracy Czaczkowski

44-year-old Tracy Czaczkowski was shot and killed while in a vehicle on I-90/94. She was returning to Illinois with her family.

A Milwaukee County judge ordered a competency evaluation of Hays in June after the defense raised concerns about his mental health. The court found Hays competent to proceed after a doctor’s report was returned at the end of July.

Hays will be back in court on September 12th.
