ITALY — A strong, shallow earthquake devastated towns in central Italy early Wednesday, August 24th — placing rescuers in a desperate race against time to try to pull survivors from the rubble.

It was a 6.2 magnitude quake.

Even if you are geographically removed from the area, here in Wisconsin, for example, there are ways you can make a difference for those directly impacted by the natural disaster.

1. Donate to the Italian Red Cross

2. Donate to GlobalGiving.org’s “Italy Earthquake Relief Fund”

3. Donate to the National Italian American Foundation

3. Donate to the international animal rescue group OIPA International

4. Donate to ShelterBox, an organization which provides a literal box filled with essentials to disaster victims

4. Donate blood — AVIS, the main blood donation organization in Italy, has issued an urgent appeal for blood donations

5. Make sure your friends and family are safe: Facebook has activated Safety Check
