On the road: Packers travel to California to take on San Francisco 49ers in third preseason game

SANTA CLARA, California -- The Green Bay Packers will take on the San Francisco 49ers Friday, August 26th at Levi's Stadium in Santa Clara, California -- the green and gold's third preseason game.

Kickoff is set for 9:00 p.m. CT.

According to Packers.com, this will be the first preseason matchup between the two teams since 2008.

Friday night's game will be the Packers' second time playing at Levi's Stadium. They won 17-3 in Week 4 of the 2015 regular season.

Green Bay leads the all-time regular-season series against the 49ers, 31-27-1, and is 4-3 vs. San Francisco in the postseason, according to Packers.com.

The Packers and 49ers have met four times during the preseason, with Green Bay’s only win coming at San Francisco in 1959 (24-17).

In regular season matchups, the Packers have won 11 of the past 14 contests, with the only losses coming in 1990, 2012 and 2013 vs. the 49ers. According to Packers.com, the Pack has not scored less than 12 points against the 49ers since 1981.

The Packers and 49ers last met on October 4th, 2015. The Packers won 17-3 at Levi's Stadium. That matchup saw the 49ers score three points -- the fewest scored by the 49ers against the Packers since a 20-3 victory by Green Bay in 1999, according to Packers.com.

During that matchup, QB Aaron Rodgers completed 22 of 32 passes (68.8 percent) for 224 yards and a touchdown. Richard Rodgers, James Jones and Randall Cobb caught five passes, and Rodgers had the go-ahead score on the opening drive. Sam Shields intercepted Colin Kaepernick deep in Green Bay territory in the fourth quarter to maintain control of the game.

The 49ers have a new head coach this season. Chip Kelly is in his first year as the 49ers 18th head coach.

The Packers are 2-0 in the preseason -- with wins vs. the Raiders (20-12) and Browns (17-11). The Packers first preseason game, the Hall of Fame game vs. the Indianapolis Colts had to be canceled on August 7th due to turf issues in Canton, Ohio.

Friday's game marks the first of four consecutive road games (two preseason, two regular season) before the Packers host the Detroit Lions on September 25th. According to Packers.com, this is the first time Green Bay has closed the preseason as the away team in the final two games and opened the regular season on the road in the first two games.

The Packers will finish the preseason against the Kansas City Chiefs at Arrowhead Stadium on Thursday, September 1st.
