Police: Loaded pistol magazine found in field near McLane Elementary School

WEST BEND -- A teacher at McLane Elementary School reported finding a loaded pistol magazine in the field west of the school on Thursday, September 1st.

The West Bend Police Department responded to the school and an extensive search was conducted. No firearms were located on school grounds -- and it was determined that no students were in danger

The school has sent out a letter to the students' families:

Dear Parents and Guardians,

The West Bend District is committed to the safety and education of all of our students. I am writing to let you know that at approximately 1:45 p.m. today, a McLane teacher discovered a loaded pistol magazine in the field west of the school. There was no associated weapon found in or on school grounds. The teacher immediately notified me. Superintendent Erik Olson and the West Bend Police Department were notified and officers were dispatched to the school. Please know that at no time was there a threat to student safety.

After an initial investigation that included a sweep of the building and grounds, the West Bend Police Department deemed the area safe for children, staff and the community. The West Bend Police Department will continue to investigate this incident and will provide additional patrol to the area. As always, we take any threat to the safety of our students and staff seriously. Per West Bend School District board policy, weapons of any kind are not allowed on school grounds.

We appreciate the immediate response from the West Bend Police Department on this incident to help us ensure a safe learning environment; we are grateful for their support.
