Alert citizen helps Milwaukee police catch attempted armed robbery suspect

MILWAUKEE -- Milwaukee police were able to catch an armed robber thanks to an alert citizen early Sunday morning, October 4th on Milwaukee's south side.

According to police, around 3:30 a.m., they responded to a call for a report of an attempted armed robbery at the Speedway Gas Station located on W. College Avenue near South 13th Street.

An employee told officers that a man entered the store, implied he had a weapon and tried to steal money from the cash register. Police say the suspect was unsuccessful and fled from the gas station.

According to police, as the cashier ran out after the suspect, a customer witnessed what happened and followed the suspect in his car.

Police say a short time later, an officer was at a gas station near S. 6th and Lapham, when the customer approached him and pointed out the suspect's vehicle.

The officer then took a 35-year-old Milwaukee man into custody.

Officials say the suspect is a convicted felon and faces potential robbery charges.

No other details have been released.
