Ribbon cutting celebrates grand opening of new apartment complex for the chronically homeless

MILWAUKEE -- A ribbon cutting event was held Thursday, October 6th celebrating the grand opening of the new Thurgood Marshall Apartments.

Milwaukee Mayor Tom Barrett and Milwaukee County Executive Chris Abele were among those taking part.

Thurgood Marshall Apartments, located on 6th Street near Reservoir Avenue, features 24 units.

The building will house those who deal with chronic homelessness and alcoholism.

This is part of a program to end homelessness in Milwaukee County by taking those who are living on the street and getting them into permanent homes.

On-site support will be available for residents 24/7.

"Milwaukee is making progress on this issue, faster than any other metro in America. And you want to know why that matters? Because I think every society should be measured by how it seeks to improve the lives of the most vulnerable," Abele said.

A number of community partners launched the plan in the summer of 2015 with a goal of ending chronic homelessness in Milwaukee County.
