WATCH: HBO releases trailer for its documentary, "Beware the Slenderman"

WAUKESHA -- HBO released this week a new trailer of a movie about that tells the tale of a 2014 crime in Waukesha. Two 12-year-old girls, Morgan Geyser and Anissa Weier, are accused of trying to kill their friend in order to appease a fictional character named "Slenderman."

The HBO trailer for "Beware the Slenderman" was posted on Thursday, November 10th -- and it is rumored to be broadcast on HBO in January 2017.

The two-hour documentary made its Milwaukee debut in September. In the film, director Irene Taylor Brodsky explores the vulnerability of youth and whether the girls accused should face adult court.

"Beware the Slenderman" doesn't only recount the events of the attack, but of the pervasiveness of the internet's darker side.

Brodsky also explores the mental health of the accused girls and asks the question how should society hold our children accountable.

"I think you can't responsibly talk about this crime without talking about the internet. The internet was this universe that these girls were inhabiting with a certain vigor and enthusiasm that might even be more than the typical kid," said Brodsky. "I think talking about mental illness is at the center."

The film includes home movies of the girls, photos from their childhood and interviews with family members of Geyser and Weier.

The family of the victim did not participate in the making of the documentary.

The trials of Morgan Geyser and Anissa Weier are scheduled for 2017 in adult court.
