Quick strikes help Waukesha Catholic Memorial win D3 title

MADISON -- Two big plays on offense and a stout defense helped Waukesha Catholic Memorial defeat Green Bay Notre Dame 24-14 to win the WIAA Division 3 football championship on Friday.

Jaylen Campbell rushed for 167 yards and a touchdown for the Crusaders (14-0), who flipped the result from last year's title game against the Tritons (12-2) in claiming their second WIAA crown.

Campbell broke free for a 70-yard touchdown run on the game's third play from scrimmage. After Notre Dame answered with an 11-play, 80-yard scoring drive, Crusaders quarterback Ben Nimz hit Max Cooper on a 62-yard touchdown pass.

Both teams struggled offensively from that point, with Catholic Memorial and Notre Dame each turning the ball over three times. Eric Fridl's 44-yard interception return for a touchdown gave the Crusaders a 21-7 lead late in the third quarter.

Nate Ihlenfeldt scored twice for the Tritons.
