More than 500 show interest in caring for infant surrendered at fire station

MINEOLA, N.Y. — More than 500 callers have expressed interest in caring for a newborn baby girl who was surrendered on Thanksgiving Day morning at a suburban New York fire station.

The president of the Long Island-based AMT Children of Hope Foundation says the baby is the 15th infant to be surrendered this year in the New York area.

Timothy Jaccard says that's about average for the organization.

The child was surrendered under a state law that allows a parent to anonymously bring an infant to a safe haven, including a firehouse or police station. Jaccard says a woman believed to be the child's mother called him and made arrangements to surrender the child.

The child will be placed with a family already certified to provide foster care.
