Calling all knitters! American Heart Association seeks red hats for babies born in February

MILWAUKEE -- The American Heart Association needs your help kicking off the Little Hats, Big HeartsTM program by knitting or crocheting red hats.

The hats will be distributed to babies born in participating hospital birthing centers throughout Wisconsin during February, American Heart Month.

Hats will be collected from now through January 15th.

According to the American Heart Association, the Little Hats, Big HeartsTM program raises awareness of heart disease, the number one killer of Americans, and congenital heart defects, the most common type of birth defect in the country.

Hats are needed in both newborn and preemie sizes and should be made of yarn that is red, cotton or acrylic, medium to heavy weight, and machine washable and dryable.

Donations of yarn are also accepted.

“As we prepare for American Heart Month, it is a special privilege for the American Heart Association to be able to provide the smallest hearts in Wisconsin with a special token so they know the American Heart Association is here for their whole life,” said Britni Reinhard, Corporate Events Director and coordinator of the program for the American Heart Association in Madison.

This is the second year of the Little Hats, Big HeartsTM program in Wisconsin, which provides hats to newborn babies in more than 40 states across the country.

The Little Hats, Big HeartsTM program is sponsored in Madison by AAA Wisconsin.

Knitters can drop off hats at any AAA location throughout the state.

Hats can also be dropped off at either Milwaukee or Madison American Heart Association office.
