Town of Geneva police: 44-year-old man from Burlington died when he fell through ice on Lake Como

WALWORTH COUNTY -- Officials with the Town of Geneva Police Department have identified a man whose body was recovered from Lake Como on Friday, December 9th, after police said a witness saw the man fall through the ice and never resurface.

The victim has been identified as 44-year-old Michael Montemayor of Burlington.

According to police, around 1:15 p.m. Friday, officers responded to the report that Montemayor had been walking on Lake Como when he fell through the ice.

It was determined he had walked onto the lake from property in Geneva National on the northwest side of the lake. Police said Montemayor was several hundred yards onto the lake when he fell through.

The Walworth County Sheriff’s Office deployed deputies in wet suits, as well as a dive team.

The City of Lake Geneva deployed a rescue team on an airboat and reached the area where Montemayor had fallen through the ice and immediately began a search.

Additional aid was also requested through a Mutual Aid Box Alarm System, designed for public safety responses from emergency responders located in southeastern Wisconsin and northern Illinois.

At 3:30 p.m., the rescue effort became a recovery effort.

At approximately 4:52 p.m., the victim was located and at approximately 5:28 p.m., the victim was recovered.

Officials from multiple agencies responded to this scene.
