TOWN OF WILSON -- 36 dogs were seized and removed from a location in the Town of Wilson on Friday, June 30th, the Sheboygan County Sheriff's Office said.

Deputies executed several search warrants regarding an animal welfare investigation at the location. No names are being released at this time as no one has currently been charged.

With the assistance of the Sheboygan County Humane Society (SCHS), the dogs were removed.

"Golden retriever mixes, Bernese mixes. Typically what I've seen is they're under about two to three years," said Executive Director of the Sheboygan County Humane Society, Leah Helms.

FOX6 was there as employees with the SCHS and sheriff's office loaded the dogs onto a truck and drove them to the local animal shelter.

"So we're vaccinating them, we're doing physical exams, just assessing their behavior and making sure that they're cared for at this time and just getting the essential treatment that they need," said Helms.

Those are the lucky ones. Sources say another several dozen dogs were found deceased on the property.

"I knew there were dogs there. I didn't know what kind of condition," said Todd Lededoer, lives near property.

Farmers nearby say they've never had any concerns about the welfare of the animals.

"We had an employee here that was over there helping them every once and awhile and she said the dogs were in fairly good health, from what she could tell. But that was a year and a half ago. A lot can change in the time frame," said Lededoer.

It appears a lot has changed. Once known as the "kinship companions canine" kennel, the owner lost her conditional lease permit a couple years ago and Town of Wilson leaders instructed her to get rid of the dogs over time.

Now, the community is stepping up to ensure each of the pups find a loving home.

"I think eventually they will be able to go to adoptable families," said Helms.

SCHS and Wisconsin Humane Society are collaborating in the care of the dogs. Anyone that is interested in helping provide for the care of these animals is welcome to provide monetary donations.

The sheriff's office says it is waiting to recommend any charges to the district attorney until more evidence and information comes in.
