"It's like losing your children:" 1 dog located, another still missing after break-in near 71st and Villard

MILWAUKEE -- When Mary Bennett came home Wednesday night, August 2nd, she knew something was wrong. Her dogs were missing after a break-in at her home. On Friday, August 4th, we learned one of the dogs has been located. The other, unfortunately, remains missing.

On Friday, FOX6 News learned Bear was reunited with her owner, Mary Bennett. Bear was found near 67th and Villard. We're told whoever found Bear dropped him off at the Milwaukee Area Domestic Animal Control Commission, and he was back with his owner as of Friday night.

FOX6 News was told Bear's owner was trying to track down whoever found the dog to give them half of the $500 reward offered for the dogs' safe return.

Bert, Bear's brother, remains missing.

"I haven't slept. I haven't slept," Bennett said Thursday.

It was a restless 24 hours for Bennett, who lives near 71st and Villard.

"This morning, I felt like we should do something and we looked again," Bennett said.

Her two dogs disappeared sometime Wednesday night. She got home around 11:00 p.m. and knew something was wrong.

"I pulled up. I looked at the front door and it was open, the screen door," Bennett said.

Her home had been broken into. A screen was cut, her window opened and some of her possessions -- gone.

"Things were scattered everywhere," Bennett said. "You feel violated that people were touching your things."

Bennett noticed immediately that her two dogs, "Bert" and "Bear" were also missing.

"Horrible. It's like losing your children," Bennett said.

"It was hard to have to come back and say 'I couldn't find the dogs,'" Bennett's son, Matthew Bennett said.

Matthew helped look for the nine-year-old pug mixes. The family isn't sure whether the dogs were stolen or took off during the break-in.

"It's just very difficult having to come home and tell my mom 'I can't find them,'" Matthew Bennett said.

"Everyone's been so helpful. I hope something will come of it," Mary said.

Milwaukee police tell FOX6 they continue to investigate. No arrests have been made.

Again -- Bear has been located. Bert remains missing. Anyone with information is asked to call police.
