"It's pretty scary:" 1 dead, 2 injured by gunfire near 5th and National

MILWAUKEE --  Gunfire erupted inside a Milwaukee bar, and a man was fatally struck while two others were hurt. It happened near the busy intersection of 5th and National early Saturday morning, August 26th. The victim has been identified as 20-year-old Angel Ortega.

"There were a lot of people in the streets," said Luis Alvarez, who works nearby.

Crowds had to give way to make room for police, ambulances and other first responders. Emergency crews were on scene around 1:45 a.m. Saturday morning, after shots rang out inside the tavern.

"It's pretty scary because it could have been myself," Alvarez said.

Alvarez said the nearby business he works at closed shortly before the deadly scene unfolded.

Police were tight-lipped about how the incident began, but we know it ended with shots fired.

"It's sad to hear. That's unfortunate," said Nadia Musallam, a concerned neighbor.

Ortega was pronounced dead at the scene. Another man suffered serious injuries, and a woman suffered injuries not believed to be life-threatening.

"You never know when stuff like this can go down," Alvarez said.

Alvarez said he's concerned about the patrons inside, and those who frequent the lively businesses surrounding the tavern where this happened.

"We have a lot of bars, lot of restaurants. Pretty frightening, how you come here to dine and out of nowhere this stuff starts going down," Alvarez said.

"You are always thinking about the victims and their families. Be very alert, in case you see anything strange -- you have time to react," Musallam said.
