"Isn't supposed to happen:" 75-year-old man shot, injured near 81st and Beckett; suspect sought

MILWAUKEE -- "Scared and more aware" is how some neighbors said they were feeling Thursday, September 14th after an elderly man was shot in the leg by a suspect. FOX6 News has learned the suspect was not the only one with a gun.

Investigators canvassed the scene near 81st Street and Beckett Avenue, where Demetrius Cooper said Thursday he was woken up by gunfire.

"Not this close to the house. We have stuff happening over there down at the gas station but never this close," said Cooper.

It left Cooper with a mix of emotions.

"Just scared and be more aware," said Cooper.

Milwaukee police said a 75-year-old man was approached by a suspect just after 5:30 a.m. They said the suspect then shot him in the leg and ran off. The 75-year-old victim, who police say also had a gun, was taken to a hospital.

At this time, investigators believe only one shot was fired. Cooper's mother, Regina, said gun violence is not unheard of on that side of town, but this was the first time in the decade she's lived there that she's heard of one so close to her home.

"This isn't supposed to happen in any neighborhood. We should all feel safe where we live," said Regina.

Regina said she took a mental note of her neighbors and noticed Thursday someone was missing.

"We have one gentlemen that usually goes to the McDonald's to get a breakfast and I am really concerned that it is him because I didn't see him come by or come back," said Regina.

No matter who the victim of the shooting is, Regina found some comfort knowing he will survive his injury.

"Whoever it is, I am so glad that more than likely they'll be OK," said Regina.

The suspect is still on the run. Milwaukee police are still investigating the motive behind the shooting.
