"Can't find my son:" 39-year-old man in custody after bicyclist struck, killed by hit-and-run driver

KENOSHA COUNTY — The Kenosha County Sheriff’s Department is investigating a fatal hit-and-run crash involving a bicyclist that happened Sunday night, September 17th, and on Monday afternoon, they announced an arrest has been made.

Sheriff's officials said the vehicle was located, and a 39-year-old man is in custody, with charges pending. His wife contacted the Kenosha County Sheriff’s Department after reading the media release -- which included the location of the incident. This is the same area where the man reported to his wife that he thought he struck a deer the night before.

Crews responded to the area of Highway FJ (260th Avenue) near Highway C (Wilmot Road) around 9:45 p.m. Sunday.

The investigation on scene revealed that a 29-year-old man identified as Jackie Hutcheson Jr., or JJ, from Trevor was riding a bicycle northbound on 260th Avenue when he was struck from behind by a vehicle also traveling northbound.

Hutcheson died at the scene due to the injuries he sustained.

FOX6 News has learned Hutcheson volunteered at his church festival earlier in the day. His mother took off in her vehicle in an effort to find him Sunday night.

"We saw the lights, blue and red lights. I jumped out of the truck. I ran down there. I told the officer 'I'm missing my son. I can't find my son,'" Hutcheson's mother said.

Hutcheson Jr.'s mother said her son drove his sister home in her car after a birthday celebration, and he was biking to his own home when it happened. He was discovered by a passerby, and debris from the striking vehicle were left behind at the scene.

"A passerby found a bike on its side. He was ejected from the bicycle. No skid marks. We have no indication at this time how fast the vehicle was driving," Mark Malecki with the Kenosha County Sheriff's Department said.

Hutcheson Jr.'s mother said he was growing out his hair to donate to cancer patients, and his family plans to follow through with that.

Meanwhile, Hutcheson Jr.'s mother had this to say about the alleged hit-and-run driver:

"They knew they hit him. They knew. Why didn't they stop to check him? Why couldn't they stop?" she said.

Authorities say the vehicle left the scene in an unknown direction after the crash. The speed limit in this area is 35 miles-per-hour.
