2 Milwaukee police officers injured after high-speed pursuit ended in crash near 12th and North



MILWAUKEE -- Two Milwaukee police officers were injured after a high-speed chase took a scary turn Friday night, January 5th. It ended in a crash near 12th and North. Investigators say the suspects slammed into a concrete light pole, and it fell on a police squad. The suspects tried running from the scene, but didn't get very far.

"I was in my house and I just heard a big ole 'boom,'" said Shavanada Hopson, witness.

Hopson ran to the window to see what happened.

"I saw that the light pole was knocked down. There was a police car and a red car crashed into each other," Hopson said.

Police said this all began with a carjacking. Three suspects stole a vehicle during an armed robbery and took off.

Hopson said she knows the victim.

"She's just crying, hurt. This is her car," Hopson said.

When police spotted the suspects, they chased after them. The pursuit came to a crashing halt when the stolen vehicle slammed into a concrete pole.

The pole fell on the pursuing squad, injuring the officers inside. They were taken to the hospital for treatment of non-life threatening injuries.

"They were just trying to do their job," Hopson said.

Investigators say the three suspects ran from the scene, but the 21, 22 and 17-year-olds were eventually arrested.

"It was just a scary situation," said Hopson.

A scary situation Hopson is thankful didn't end worse.

"I just pray for the officers that they're OK," said Hopson.

The officers are expected to be OK. The investigation continues.
