OZAUKEE COUNTY -- A Port Washington man, 29, died Wednesday night, Jan. 17 after a snowmobile accident in the Town of Fredonia. It happened on the Milwaukee River.

Officials have identified the victim as Daniel Dickmann.

On the Milwaukee River, daylight Thursday revealed what was left behind after the deadly crash.

"The hood was cracked, kind of sitting on top of the river. The patient was already being attended to," said Chief Jason Caswell, Waubeka Fire Department.

Chief Caswell was called to the scene just before midnight.

"The patient was laying in the snow about six feet away from the snowmobile," said Caswell.

The Ozaukee County Sheriff's Office said Dickmann died in the crash.

"We're very sorry for the loss of life," said Caswell.

Caswell said snowmobile crashes on the frozen river are uncommon in the area. He said this incident is a reminder for riders to keep safety top of mind.

"If you don't know the area, go slow," said Caswell.

"Operating a snowmobile has it's own unique challenges," said Gary Eddy, with the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources (DNR). "Always ride with a safety mindset."

The Ozaukee County Sheriff's Office and DNR are working together to figure out what went wrong on the ice.
