Michael Spears

MILWAUKEE — Michael Spears, 41, of Milwaukee is now charged in connection with the fatal shooting of  Kole Jopek, 18, shot and killed near 44th and Garfield on Jan. 25, days before his 19th birthday. Spears was arrested Jan. 30 after a standoff.

Spears faces the following criminal charges:

  • First degree reckless homicide, use of a dangerous weapon
  • Possession of a firearm by a felon

According to a criminal complaint, Jopek on Jan. 25 was inside a home where a friend had apparently arranged a drug deal. The complaint says at some point during the transaction, the drug supplier, later identified as Spears, produced a pistol and said, “‘You know what time it is!’ or words to that effect.” A witness says the gunman then pushed Jopek against the wall — and gunfire rang out.
