Eating breakfast while driving: WisDOT shares video of distracted driver who caused crash on US 45

WEST BEND -- Officials with the Wisconsin Department of Transportation are reminding drivers to slow down and move over for emergency vehicles after a scary situation on US 45 in West Bend Monday morning, Feb. 12.

WisDOT officials said around 8 a.m., there was a crash on US 45 southbound, just south of WIS 33 near Chestnut St., and as first responders worked at the scene of that crash, a secondary crash occurred.

This, after a driver failed to slow down while approaching the emergency vehicles. That driver rear-ended another vehicle, sending that vehicle into the ditch.

The driver then slid towards the first responders who were working to address the initial incident.

After just missing a first responder, the vehicle struck a vehicle that had pulled over because the driver was a witness to the initial crash.

The driver that caused the secondary crash admitted to eating breakfast while driving and traveling at 50 miles-per-hour in the area occupied by first responders.

WisDOT officials said in a news release: "This incident highlights the need for drivers to slow down and move over when approaching emergency vehicles with lights turned on. While no officers or other first responders were injured during this event, it highlights the dangers of distracted driving."
