Police: Gun target practice in apartment leads to arrest in Cape Coral, Fla.

CAPE CORAL, Fla. -- Police in Cape Coral, Fla. say they arrested a man, 61, who was essentially conducting target practice inside his apartment, and they say neighbors found bullet holes in their unit.

According to a news release from police, shortly before 9 a.m. on Sunday, Feb. 18, officers were dispatched to the apartment building on Skyline Blvd. near SW 35th St. A couple told investigators they were woken up by "a loud bang," and they then noticed a hole in their headboard, just over their heads. They found another hole in a dresser mirror at the foot of their bed, and in the adjacent living room.

Police made contact with Ivan Bakh, the next-door neighbor. While clearing his home, investigators found a hole in the wall leading to the couple's apartment. Inside Bakh's unit, police found a thick book propped up on a shelf with several rounds having penetrated it. Police say it appears Bakh was using it as a target, as a target was drawn on the book with a red marker.

A search warrant was obtained and executed on Bakh's home, and investigators found a target drawn with a red marker on the wall leading to the couple's apartment made of multiple books taped together. It was shot with three rounds, penetrated by one or more rounds. Police found a 9mm casing in the hallway between the bathroom and bedroom of Bakh's home and a safe with a 9mm Glock inside. The rounds in the Glock handgun matched the spent casing on the ground inside Bakh's home.

Bakh was arrested on charges of shooting into a dwelling and reckless discharge of a firearm in a public or private place, and transported to jail.
