Deputy administered Narcan after exposure to unknown substance during traffic stop

WAUKESHA COUNTY -- Two Waukesha County deputies were exposed to an unknown substance while searching a suspect's vehicle Monday night, Feb. 26. The deputies were taken to the hospital and later released, but not before one of them was administered Narcan at the scene.

The incident happened just after 9 p.m. on I-94 at South Calhoun Rd. The two deputies were conducting a traffic stop. They arrested the driver and his passenger.

While they were searching the suspect vehicle, they were exposed to a substance inside. One of the deputies was administered Narcan, a drug that is typically used to reverse the effects of opioids.

Ironically, deputies and other first responders carry the drug to administer to others as opioid overdoses have become commonplace. Law enforcement has been warned about the consequences of even the slightest exposure to the drug fentanyl. There have been cases where officers across the country have overdosed just by getting the drug residue on their clothing.

We don't know for sure what the substance was that the deputies were exposed to Monday night. That will come later, possibly once the two suspects are officially charged.

The suspects face drug-related charges. In addition, the driver faces a charge of driving while under the influence. They were both taken to the hospital, too, as precaution.

Officials say a portion of I-94 westbound was closed for several hours due to the incident.

The investigation is ongoing.
