UW-Madison, UW-Whitewater have safety kits in buildings to help in event of mass shooting

WHITEWATER -- Schools across the country are taking a close look at their safety plans after the mass shooting in Parkland, Florida that took 17 lives.

UW-Madison added safety kits to its buildings this week. The same kits were placed inside UW-Whitewater months ago.

Each kit has a compression bandage, gauze and a tourniquet, meant to give aid to anyone in need.

"We don't want to end up on the side of paranoia, but we sure want to prepare," an official said.

The kits cost $50 and will be added to residence halls next.

This semester, the UW-Whitewater Police Department began teaching free classes on how to use the kits.
