Police seek suspect who stole vehicle with girl, 10, in back seat; child found unharmed

MILWAUKEE -- Milwaukee police are searching for a suspect who stole a vehicle near 47th and Center on Sunday night, April 1 -- with a girl, 10, in the back seat.

It happened around 9:45 p.m.

Police said the vehicle, a 2018 Nissan Murano, was stolen with the child inside.

"It's scary because you just never know, like, it's always something, whether it's shooting or...and it's more safe to take your kids with you --  even if it's in and out -- take your kids with you," said Octavia Barron.

The vehicle was found abandoned a short distance away, and the girl was found unharmed. A relative said the man driving the car made a quick stop at a home, and left the girl in the vehicle. When he came back outside, the vehicle and the girl were gone. The relative said the girl actually got out of the vehicle and started walking, and 40 blocks away, a good Samaritan saw her and called police.

"I'm very happy she's OK, but at the end of the day, we got to find out a situation where we don't have to be in this kind of thing because our kids are precious. They need to be safe," a neighbor said.

Neighbors said they're grateful this story has a happy ending, and the girl is OK.

"You don't ever know. I always take my kids with me wherever I go, or if I have something to do, they're going to come. Even if you run in for a minute. Even if I run in for a minute. If I go to the gas station, I take my kids with me because people pull up and they will take your car and rob you for your car. It's too much," said Barron.

A search for the suspect is ongoing.
