MILWAUKEE -- 34-year-old Robert Brown is dead after a shooting on Milwaukee's northwest side Wednesday night, May 23. Neighbors in the area of 80th and Beckett woke up to the sound of gunfire around 11 p.m.

"I heard a couple gunshots go off. It startled me in the middle of the night," said Joanne Valencia, who lives nearby.

Shortly after the gunfire erupted, Valencia watched as her block became a massive crime scene.

"I got up and came to the living room to see what's going on. There was all these squad cars over here -- the lights flashing and everything," said Valencia.

"They had roped off the streets. They did the alley. They were out here past midnight," said another neighbor, Pat.

Despite lifesaving efforts by first responders, Brown died at the scene. Pat, who also lives nearby, said she believes the gunfire came not far from her neighbor's backyard.

"It scared the heck out of me. It was just too close to home," said Pat.

The murder rocked a street made up of families with children.

"It's pretty quiet. Everybody tends to keep to themselves or we kind of know each other by first names," said Pat.

"I have never heard of this happening on this block. I feel rather secure and safe here," said Valencia.

Neighbors have offered support to the victim's loved ones.

"I'm sorry that this had happened. I mean, it was just a ridiculous act," said Pat.

Police are still investigating what led up to the deadly shooting. They continue to search for the shooter.
