OWI charges recommended against driver who allegedly caused crash that hurt 5 in Grafton

GRAFTON -- Five people were taken to the hospital after a crash that happened when a Mercedes, being driven at a high rate of speed, blew a red light -- striking four vehicles as it sped through the intersection.

It happened Saturday, June 30 shortly before 5 p.m. at the intersection of Port Washington Road and Pioneer Road in Grafton.

According to Ozaukee County sheriff's officials, a deputy on patrol witnessed the crash allegedly caused by a Shorewood man, 28, who was driving the Mercedes.

That man was taken to the hospital for treatment of injuries not believed to be life-threatening. He was arrested, and toxicology results are pending. Charges of OWI, causing injury by intoxicated use of a vehicle, operating without a valid license, causing great bodily harm and second degree recklessly endangering safety are being referred against him.

A Grafton man, 34, driving a pickup truck was taken to the hospital by ambulance and then flown to Froedtert Hospital for treatment of injuries not believed to be life-threatening.

Three people who were in a Toyota Camry, a woman, 52, a man, 53 and a woman, 76, all from Glendale, were taken to the hospital for treatment of cuts from shattered glass.

A Cedarburg man, 63, who was driving a Volvo that was struck, wasn't hurt.
