HUD invests $2.3M to increase economic opportunities in Milwaukee 'to make sure that working is the norm'

Joseph Galvan

MILWAUKEE -- Milwaukee's Public Housing Authority is receiving a multi-million dollar grant to help people find long-term housing and employment.

"We all benefit when every individual has a more fair opportunity to achieve their God-given potential," said Joseph Galvan, HUD Midwest regional administrator.

Milwaukee is one of seven cities receiving a total of $14 million from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD). Milwaukee's cut is $2.3 million.

"We need to concentrate on the individuals," said Galvan.

Galvan made the announcement from Milwaukee's Hillside Family Resource Center. The $2.3 million is part of HUD's Jobs Plus Initiative.

"This program intends to saturate the community to make sure that working is the norm," said Sue Kenealy, Milwaukee Housing Authority.

The money is estimated to directly impact 275 public housing families as well as help with job placement, financial counseling and educational advancements.

"Some of these dollars will actually be dedicated in order to support keeping rent frozen," said Tony Perez, Housing Authority secretary.

Participants will be able to increase their income while having their rent frozen for up to 48 months.

"If you freeze it, people won't be afraid to find employment," said Perez.

Milwaukee Mayor Tom Barrett

Milwaukee Mayor Tom Barrett described the grant as positive momentum for residents facing employment and housing challenges.

"Taking people with, often, challenges in their lives and allowing them to get ahead of the game," said Barrett.
