'She was a nice, sweet lady:' Neighbors in disbelief after woman killed near 25th and Chambers

MILWAUKEE -- A woman was shot and killed on Milwaukee's north side early Wednesday, July 25. It happened in the area of 25th and Chambers around 4:20 a.m.

People who knew the victim said they're in disbelief. They said she was the kind of person everyone got along with.

"It makes me real scared now," said Felicia Owens, neighbor.

While police had not identified the 34-year-old victim as of Wednesday afternoon, people in the area said she lived a block away from where it happened, and they said she was well liked by everyone.

"She was a nice, sweet lady. Just makes no sense," said Owens.

This is one of 59 homicides in the city so far in 2018. Faith leaders in the area are praying for answers.

"I think it's a sad situation and I think something needs to be done about it. I hope they find who done this, that's responsible for it," said Lashawnda Hibbler, Man Child Global Network.

Hibbler said the violence is a consequence of poverty in the neighborhood.

"They're dealing with hunger, depression, oppression, suppression and sometimes the only thing to do or react is to take frustration out on other people -- which is not the right thing to do, but it happens because they're frustrated," said Hibbler.

Hibbler said she's working to eliminate those frustrations -- offering free clothes and food to try to prevent future tragedies.

"Now it is our time to empower and to educate those that have come from that place -- to help those that are still there," said Hibbler.

Investigators are still searching for a suspect and possible motive.

The investigation is ongoing.
