Police: Suspicious package found in front of Greenfield apartment 'not a threat'

GREENFIELD --  A tactical situation was underway Thursday morning, July 26 in the area of 35th and Wilbur in Greenfield after a suspicious package was found in front of an apartment door.

According to authorities, at approximately 5 a.m. a man who was having a mental health crisis called 911 from his apartment. While a dispatcher was talking with the man, the dispatcher heard a gunshot and the line went dead.

When officers arrived on scene and approached the apartment, they found a suspicious package in front of the apartment door.

Out of an abundance of caution, officers and negotiators from the Greenfield Police Department, explosive ordnance disposal technicians from the Milwaukee Police Department and the FBI responded to the scene.

After determining the package was not a threat, tactical officers entered the apartment and found the resident deceased from a self-inflicted gunshot wound.
