Milwaukee's Midtown neighborhood comes together to 'Stand 4 Peace'

MILWAUKEE -- On the heels of a very violent night in Milwaukee, the community is coming together to 'Stand 4 Peace.' Saturday, Aug. 25 the focus was on Tiefenthaler Park -- where a rebirth is in the making.

"It just shows what can happen when people come together," said Anne Koller, organizer.

Anne Koller grew up in the area and decided it was time to give back. Together, with her brother, an idea was born to use art and basketball to bring peace.

"It brings in symbolism, earth, heart, art," said Koller.

The 53205 ZIP code came together for a celebration.

Music filled the park as basketball was played.

"Everybody wants peace, people want art, people want culture and the ability to celebrate," said Megan Shepard, Friends of Tiefenthaler Park.

Their goal is to make the park safe again.

"There's a lot of crime and challenges that we have, yet it's important because there's a lot of beauty and value and innovation

Those who live in the area say it's inspiring.

"Whenever you beautify anything, it's an invitation to come and explore it," said Annice Lampkins, neighbor.

They look forward to seeing the beauty of the park grow and the message of unity continue.

"This has been incredibly important. This is step one of 1,000," said Shepard.

The goal is for the project at the park to grow. Organizers want to redo a second basketball court and there is a long-term goal to bring a community center to the area.
