'It's terrifying:' Man arrested after assault in Wauwatosa

WAUWATOSA -- One person was taken into custody Monday night, Sept. 10 following an assault that happened in Wauwatosa on Sunday, Sept. 9.

An initial investigation revealed the assault occurred in an undeveloped area of the Milwaukee County Grounds just north of 87th and Watertown Plank Road -- a busy area for runners, walkers and people out with their dogs.

"It's normally just beautiful and there's people with their dogs," said Jonathan Diel, who frequents the area with his dog, Preacher.

He saw the commotion on Sunday.

"A woman and her dog came out and she said police officers asked her to leave the woods. By the time we got to the other side, I saw some yellow tape up and some more additional cars roll in," said Diel.

Police said a suspect was quickly developed and an arrest was made on Monday around 7 p.m. after a standoff at 44th and Vliet. The suspect is a 29-year-old Milwaukee man.

"It's terrifying. This is something that we shouldn't have to worry about," said Colleen McCarthy, who often runs in the area.

Police said information regarding this incident was initially not released "as doing so could have severely impeded the investigation, allowed for the destruction of evidence or the suspect to evade arrest."

"I've always felt safe here. I've never had any problems at all, so it's really scary something like this happened here. We should be able to run alone without having that fear," said McCarthy.

This investigation is ongoing. Police said there's no danger to the public.
