'The growth of our community cannot be denied:" Milwaukee kicks off Hispanic Heritage Month

Mayor Tom Barrett

MILWAUKEE -- Milwaukee Mayor Tom Barrett on Monday, Sept. 17 joined community leaders to kick off Hispanic Heritage Month, highlighting month-long programming around the city and encouraging the public to engage in a variety of workshops, socials and celebrations.

"I am designating Sept. 15 to Oct. 15 Hispanic Heritage Month throughout the City of Milwaukee," said Mayor Barrett.

Mayor Barrett said Hispanic Heritage Month is a time to celebrate. The fastest growing segment of the Milwaukee population is Hispanic -- and that growth is not slowing down.

"The growth of our community cannot be denied," said Ricardo Diaz, United Community Center.

Over the next month, the city, private business owners and even the Milwaukee Brewers will highlight Hispanic heritage.

"It's actually our first 'Hispanic Heritage Game,'" said Kathy Schwab, Milwaukee Brewers.

Although it's a 30-day celebration --  organizers said they hope it's only the beginning.

"It is our goal that we can shine a light not only on this month, but on a community that has long been overlooked -- a community that has a lot of potential and a community I am proud to be a part of," said Griselda Aldrete, Hispanic Professionals of Greater Milwaukee.

The first "Brewers Hispanic Heritage Game" is set for Monday night, Sept. 17 at Miller Park. An Honor Guard will be present for the national anthem, carrying flags representing the origin of every player in the organization.
