Approximately 100 shelter animals from North Carolina, South Carolina arrive in Waukesha

WAUKESHA -- The Humane Animal Welfare Society (HAWS) has partnered up with the Humane Society of the United States, Tito's Vodka, GreaterGood.org and Wings of Rescue to support displaced Hurricane Florence dogs.

Landing in Waukesha on Saturday, Sept. 22 the precious cargo is hoping to find forever families in the Midwest. Some stoic, others anxious, the 100 dogs and cats will be placed in eight shelters around the state.

"These animals have been through a lot today and many still have a journey to make to the shelters that will help them get ready for their homes in Wisconsin," said Wisconsin State Director for The Humane Society, Melissa Tedrowe.

The cross-country move is to help free up kennel space in the areas affected by Hurricane Florence, where there's been an influx of stray or surrendered pets.

"These animals were waiting for homes in North Carolina. We helped clear them out of those shelters, give them homes here to make room for pets that could be reunited with their owners locally," said Tedrowe.

The Humane Society is providing financial support to the receiving shelters, while other organizations, charities and businesses have pitched in to pay for the flight and vaccinations.

"Working together, it just makes you feel good," said Lynn Olenik, HAWS executive director.

Now it's up to the community to give the furry friends in need all the love int he world.

"There will be a short waiting period while we get the animals checked out medically, feed them, get them bathed, and then they should be ready for adoption," said Tedrowe.

According to HAWS officials, the animals will soon be available for adoption at HAWS and other participating shelters, including:
