'Heard 'pop, pop, pop, pop, pop:'' Investigation underway after man's body found in Kenosha alley

KENOSHA -- An investigation is underway after a man was found dead in an alley in Kenosha Sunday morning, Nov. 18. The victim has been identified as Deonte White, 27, of Zion, Illinois.

Kenosha police said they received a call about gunshots near 26th Avenue and 67th Street around 3:15 a.m. Upon arrival, officers found the man's body in an alley.

Police worked into the night on Sunday, going door-to-door in an effort to locate witnesses and/or surveillance video.

"I heard 'pop, pop, pop, pop, pop,' and it sounded like it was from the same gun. There was no exchange fire," said Shelley Meyer, neighbor.

Neighbors like Meyer woke up to shouting and gunfire early Sunday, and after that, they heard tires squealing. Police were on scene moments later, but no suspect was found.

"A lot of police activity just came swarming in. I saw a dozen or more cops go running through a backyard, and that's when we found out there was a victim," said Meyer.

Police on Sunday had not released a description of a suspect or suspects, and did not say whether this was related to gang or drug activity. The investigation is ongoing.

"The gangs and the drugs have just been going up and up in this neighborhood," said Meyer.

The body was found less than a block from St. Joseph Catholic Academy.

"Stop bringing this negativity here. We have children. We have schools. We have innocent people," said Meyer.
